3 MAKEUP ARTIST TIPS TO GET THE BOLD, BEAUTIFUL LASHES YOU LOVE

mascara tips
Long and strong, full and thick, sculpted and defined…we never tire of dreaming up adjectives to define one of our most-prized features–eyelashes. Of course, describing them is one thing; actually getting your lashes to accentuate your eyes in the way you want them to is another story. Get ready to bat those big, beautiful eyes of yours because we got the scoop from our favorite lash-loving makeup artists on how to get the eyelash looks you crave.

Add Thickness to Your Eyelashes

The key to achieving full, thick, impossibly lush lashes is focusing on the root. Always curl your lashes (the right way!), then get your mascara wand as close to the base of your eyelashes as possible and wiggle back and forth–really working the product in. To avoid tarantula lashes that all stick together in the center, celebrity makeup artist Tim Quinn recommends using your wand to guide the lashes in place as go. For the inner eyelashes, brush towards your nose. Brush the lashes in the center straight up.

Add Length to Your Eyelashes

To add length to you lashes, you can’t forget the tips. Apply one coat of lengthening mascara to the topside of your eyelashes, brushing down slightly. Finish with coat of mascara applied as you normally would–starting from base and brushing up. LA-based makeup artist Elyse Reneau notes the importance of choosing a conditioning formula so your mascara won’t dry out and flake off. Using a lash conditioning primer, applied to tips and the roots, before your first coat will help maximize length and keep mascara in place.

Create Va-Va-Voom Eyelashes

Sometimes one ultra-defined lash look just isn’t enough. When you want extreme volume and incredible length, you’re going to need multiple coats of a high impact mascara that does it all. Professional makeup artist Elle Leary has this system down to a science. Start off easy, with a light coat of defining or lengthening mascara, curl your lashes, and allow that coat to dry. That light layer will help hold the curl. You must allow the first application to dry completely, because you’re going to repeat this process twice more with a mascara that lifts, lengthens, stretches and extends each and every last lash.
